    "Strategy Communication Made Visible"

    Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast

    …Peter Drucker

At the September 18th meeting we will interweave a quick overview of the ‘case study’ described in the book, with the group working on an example closer to home.

A 2014 Korn Ferry survey found that “32% said their organizational culture aligns to a great extent with their business strategy.” Of course that means 68% DON’T!

Much has been written about how to drive culture change to support strategy. Others have written about driving strategy into the organization through a policy deployment structure.

There has to be a more organic option that can do both!

Presenters are: Dave Nave & Paul Osborn from Balanced Hoshin. Both are dedicated to constructive intervention and are passionate about aligning management practices and structure to create dynamic and meaningful change.

The holistic tool we call ‘Balanced Hoshin’ was created to reconnect a company to their strategy. The tool shows a coherent and integrated picture, one that can be communicated to the entire workforce.

For OD professions, the issue of aligning culture to strategy can be addressed while the organization is focused on developing and using the strategy communication tool.

Dave Nave is a Management Engineer with a focus on creating the appropriate strategy, culture, structure, processes, and values needed to produce dynamic and meaningful change. He uses his unique combination of Engineering background and business/management perspective to guide organizations towards serving a useful purpose and how to manage them well. Focusing on a philosophy centered on the dignity of work and a humane system of managing.

Dave’s experiences include; automotive, defense, and aerospace, microelectronics, and high vacuum fittings, and he has worked as a machinist, CNC Programmer, and Manufacturing / Quality / Industrial Engineering positions.

Dave holds a MBA in Management Systems (Deming Scholars Program) from Fordham University and a BS in Manufacturing Engineering Technology.

He was one of only 12 people worldwide selected by The W. Edwards Deming Institute® to reconfigure Dr. Deming's famous "Four Day Seminar" into the 2.5 day seminar “Out of the Crisis” and subsequently named as a training representative.

Dave is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for The Deming Cooperative. He is also on the ‘Board of Advisors’ for The W. Edwards Deming Institute®.

He is a member of American Society for Quality, a Certified Manufacturing Engineer, and a published author.

After graduating from Edinburgh University, Scotland, in Business and Finance, Paul Osborn spent 9 years in Asia working a financial analyst for one of the leading institutional fund management firms in Hong Kong and Tokyo. Since immigrating to the US he has worked as a Product Manager, Project Manager, and PMO Director in a variety of software companies, including Thomson Financial, Wolters Kluwer, and a B2B software startup that he launched in 2005, and that he almost sold to Bloomberg in 2008.

Paul first became interested in Agile Software development in 2009 as a way to manage software projects without doing much work. Since then he’s realized that ‘not doing much work’ takes a lot of work. Paul has written two books on Agile under the moniker of The Agile PMO – one on adaptive (project) governance, and one about management and self-organization in software development teams.

Although he is a certified PMP, CSM and CHP, he most values his CSSTWP certification – the Certified Stealing Stuff That Works Practitioner – that he got on the internet for the price of a tweet. He aspires to practice it every day.

For the last 18 months Paul has been proud to have been working on The Balanced Hoshin with partner and mentor Dave Nave.

    What is Design Thinking?

In a keynote address to the Organization Development Network, renowned consultant Peter Block encouraged attendees to “integrate Design Thinking into your 21st century work”. But what does that mean for OD, HR, and L&D professionals? How might you incorporate Design Thinking into your practice?

Design Thinking is a process of iteration and collaboration most often applied to the creation of new products and services. But its similarities to organization development, in both principle and practice, means it can be applied to broader set of challenges and opportunities. This 90-min interactive session will explore the design thinking approach with emphasis on how it can strengthen organizations.

Participants in this 90-min experiential session will:

    1. Develop an applied understanding of the design thinking approach

    2. Practice the five key steps of design thinking in real-time

    3. Explore its use as an organization development method

    4. Leave with concrete next steps to experiment with Design Thinking further

There will be a follow-on half-day workshop, which will go more in depth on Monday, October 30th from 9 AM to noon at Mercer Island Community Center.

Note: In preparation for this session, we recommend reading the presenter’s article

"Design + Organization Development: Three Steps on the Bridge to the Other Side" published by the Design Management Institute (2015) and available online via: http://goo.gl/bnBRin.

Alex M. Dunne is a Seattle-based consultant and co-founder of LOCOMOTIVE PARTNERS LLC, now in its 10th year.

Designing Experiences that Develop Organizations Workshop

With Alex Dunne and Tonya Peck

How might Design Thinking aid the design and facilitation of group experiences like training, meetings, off-sites, and corporate retreats? How might OD, HR, and L&D practitioners encourage outcome-oriented business leaders to apply Design Thinking to complex/systemic challenges?

Explore these questions and more, while practicing with new experience design tools (provided). This 3-hour session expands on concepts introduced at October’s PNODN Monthly Meeting: What is Design Thinking?

    Participants will:

    1. Deepen their applied understanding of the 5-step Design Thinking (DT) process

    2. Practice with new experience tools (provided) & measure their impact

    3. Leave with new tools & concrete next steps to further the practice of DT

    Note:

    • Attending October’s intro session encouraged, but not required

    • Reading the presenter’s article "Design + Organization Development: Three Steps on the Bridge to the Other Side" published by the Design Management Institute (2015) strongly advised. Available online via: http://goo.gl/bnBRin.
