    The Future of Work

    with Gary Jusela, Ph.D

Please note that this is the 4th Monday of January due to the holiday on the 3rd Monday

During the last several decades, providing high quality jobs in the United States has been both an opportunity and a challenge for companies. Most recently, however, there has become a greater tension between the historic blue collar production workforce and the highly educated, mobile and technology-based workforce. One of the latest terms describing the new political and geographic division across this country (and several others) characterizes the workforce of “Somewheres” versus “Anywheres.”

This session on The Future of Work will explore the evolution of both business management and Organization Development along with the “pretense of knowledge” and the failure of Zero-sum thinking.

The objective is to create an illuminating conversation with the group about the future of work and the well-being of the communities within which we live.

Improving organizations through new visual tools for organizing functional data

    with Burr Stewart

Burr Stewart will facilitate the meeting and dialog on the topic of “improving organizations through new visual tools for organizing functional data”. Burr will share some of his recent work with startups seeking to understand and map the ways that workers, departments, companies and industries function and interact in ways that have consistent symantics around the world. (e.g. www.home.locus and www.matheasel.com ). His definition of function is “resources+activities=outcomes.” Discussion questions will involve barriers to visual communications inside companies and how to reduce the vulnerability often experienced when sharing functional data, and the power of functional visibility in developing a sense of “meaning”.

Burr Stewart. Strategic Advisor and Project Developer. Burr has been an advisor to hi-tech startups, consulting firms and public agencies since 2010, in the areas of community economic development, project management, sustainability and strategic planning. He previously worked for the Port of Seattle for 30 years, the Puget Sound Regional Council for one, and a global transportation consultancy in Washington DC for two. He has developed and managed airport master plans, state rail plans, new runways, IT integration strategies, climate change programs, sustainability strategies, organizational development programs, operational and financial modeling, and stakeholder outreach.

Burr holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from Harvard University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. He is a frequent speaker on sustainability related strategic planning and visual communication of complex systems. He serves on several committees of the Transportation Research Board in Washington DC, the Washington Public Ports Association in Olympia, and is the current chair of the Grants Committee at the Rotary Club of Seattle.

THE HEALTHY WORKPLACE: WHAT IS IT AND HOW DO YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN?

    with Richard Wilkinson

If our workplaces are manifestations of our collective imaginations, why not make them healthy? Richard Wilkinson, UW Tacoma’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Organizational Effectiveness & Development, and several UW colleagues wrestled with this question, collaboratively producing a chapbook containing their answers. Richard will share the process they followed in identifying the eight dimensions of a healthy workplace, its day-to-day characteristics, and the initial steps to making it happen. Attendees will receive a soft copy of the chapbook.

    RICHARD WILKINSON

Richard Wilkinson currently serves as the University of Washington Tacoma’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Organizational Effectiveness and Development. In that capacity he oversees staff HR, mentors academic HR, facilitates a variety of organizational improvement and change management initiatives, and leads management development workshops campus-wide. He is the author of UW Tacoma’s Supervisor’s Toolbox, several articles, including “My Journey to the Center of HR” in Higher Education Workplace magazine, and co-author of The Healthy Workplace Chapbook, the creation of which he facilitated with fellow UW colleagues. He is a featured practitioner in the 25th anniversary edition of Marvin Weisbord’s The Productive Workplace.

Richard’s eight-word brand is, “Caring leader; skilled facilitator; evangelist for better management.”

Prior to joining UW Tacoma, Richard worked in HR and organization development leadership capacities in global health, both in the UW’s Department of Global Health and the Seattle-based NGO, PATH. This followed fifteen years as HR Director for the City of Redmond, Washington.

He has graduate degrees from the University of Southern California in public administration and Antioch University Seattle in organization development.

    Recognize the Moment

    with Theresa Chambers

Although U.S. companies spend upwards of $100 billion annually on recognition and incentives, 65% of employees say they don’t feel valued for their contributions. Trends show companies scaling back on formal awards and focusing more on fostering a culture of appreciation at the team level – where it matters most!

This session will expand the way you think about employee recognition and inspire you to practice more meaningful appreciation at work.

We’ll begin with a short presentation to:

    • Build a business case to elevate recognition as more than just a “nice thing to do” to one that significantly impacts retention and engagement;
    • Introduce the four-dimensional model that challenges the way many organizations practice employee recognition; and
    • Practice Thankology™, the art of noticing “out loud.”

We’ll wrap up with a discussion to share low cost tools and ideas to build stronger cultures of appreciation and engagement.

    About Your Presenter

Theresa Chambers, Chief Motivation Officer of Recognition Works, helps organizations create cultures of appreciation and engagement. Theresa brings 20 years of experience designing recognition strategies and is one of the most highly regarded experts in the field.

Passionate about recognition, Theresa presents workshops to companies and associations across the country. Theresa has worked with Fortune 500 companies such as Boeing, Conoco Phillips and Beckman Coulter and local ones including CellNetix, Clark Nuber, Columbia Bank, Delta Dental, Symetra, University of Washington, and The Everett Clinic, named Fortune’s Best Places to Work.

As former Vice President of Recognition Professionals International, Theresa implemented the Best Practices Award Program and chaired its Regional Conference in Seattle. For eight years, she managed the City of Seattle’s performance award programs. From 2007-2009, she redesigned Swedish Medical Center’s performance recognition to better exemplify goals and values and increased participation by 150%.

As chair of the Puget Sound Recognition Roundtable, Theresa stays connected to the latest thinking on employee appreciation strategies as a key element to creating best place to work cultures.
