Culture Change in Local Government:  A Client Perspective

In 2013, in response to an unfavorable employee survey and the Mayor’s initiative to increase respect across all City Departments, the Public Works Division of the City of Kent embarked on an employee generated initiative to increase their voice in the workplace. With support from the top and a consulting resource, a core group built a change initiative that, 5 years later, continues to receive high marks from employees, management and the City Council for its hands on approach at engaging employees in policies and practices that optimize retention, productivity, engagement, professional development and citizen appreciation. The initiative has built a cadre of internal facilitators and is being used as a workplace transformation model across the City.

Along with their external consultant, a few representatives from the Steering Committee for “Powered by Public Works” will share their story about what they have accomplished, how they got there, and what it takes to make it sustainable. They will share the difference it has made to them, to their departments and to the citizens they serve. And they will engage with the PNODN audience to discuss ideas for how to take their new workplace culture to the next level.  Please join us to hear about this culture change success!
