From the Roots of OD to the 21st Century: The Living Legacy of Kurt Lewin

Michael Papanek

This session is online via Zoom Meeting

Michael Papanek will be doing a webinar on the roots of modern organizational development and Michael’s personal connection with Kurt Lewin, who was his grandfather. You will learn what life experiences motivated Kurt Lewin to apply new methods to understanding leadership, relationships between groups and social change, and why so many of us are "Lewinians" today (even if we might not know it). This will be of special interest for Leaders, OD Consultants, HRBPs, Learning and Development professionals, executive coaches and anyone interested in effective leadership and social change. Michael's mother, Dr. Miriam Lewin, was also a social psychologist and Michael and his mother spoke about "father" many times as Michael learned about OD. Michael will share some rare family photos and other artifacts from Kurt Lewin’s life. We will discuss the direct and inspiring connection between Lewin’s works - decades ago - and the work we do in our organizations today.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, you will have a deeper understanding of
  1. Who was Kurt Lewin, and how was his research driven by his family's experiences in Germany, before and during WWII;
  2. What Lewin discovered and his (at that time) radical approach to understanding groups, relationships, leadership, learning and social change;
  3. What tools, ideas and strategies from Lewin's work are in use today, and how these ideas can inspire members of the OD community to address the most difficult issues of our time.
