Conversations Worth Having: The Key to Positive Change

Jackie Stavros and Cheri Torres

This training will be conducted live via Zoom.

All change begins with conversation—with one’s self and others. The nature of those conversations is fateful. The good news is that fate is in our own hands. We co-create our future conversation by conversation, which means we have the collective power to create positive change. What could be more exciting…and challenging. In this highly experiential session, you will learn and apply a technique to prime yourself to be intentional with your conversations, and two simple practices to foster conversations that broaden everyone’s view and move you toward desired outcomes. The two practices—generative questions and positive framing—originate from Appreciative Inquiry, one of the most effective and widely used approach for positive whole systems change. Join us and become a conversation change agent!

In this session you will...

1. Use Tuning In to prime yourself to be intentional with your words and conversations

2. Ask generative questions to widen your view: make the invisible visible, create shared understanding, generate new knowledge, and inspire possibilities.

3. Use positive framing to have conversations that move you towards desired outcomes.

    About Your Presenters

Jackie Stavros: Jackie’s passion is working with others to discover their strengths, identify opportunities and create a plan with meaningful results for positive change! She is internationally recognized for her creation of SOAR, a positive approach to strategic thinking, planning, and leading that focuses on strengths, opportunities, aspirations and results based on strategic conversations. The heart of her work is using Appreciative Inquiry (AI), one of the most popular approaches to positive change – that is bringing out the best in people, their organizations, and communities to fuel conversations worth having that produce meaningful engagement and results. Jackie is a professor at Lawrence Technological University (LTU) College of Business and IT and has been honored with the LTU Inaugural Presidential Research Award (jstavros@ltu.edu). She is a member of the Appreciative Inquiry Council of Practitioners for the Cooperrider Center for Appreciative Inquiry.

Cheri Torres: Cheri partners with people to catalyze positive change in their workplaces and communities. The two simple practices she introduces give leaders and teams the power to strengthen relationships, expand possibilities, and increase productivity and engagement through everyday conversation. These practices are grounded in neuroscience, positive psychology, and Appreciative Inquiry, one of the most widely used approaches for systems change. She has worked with thousands of leaders and teams around the world to support high performance, engagement, and organizational success. Her work has been featured in leading media sources including Careers in Government, Fast Company, Forbes,HR Magazine, SmartBrief,Training Industry, and Training Magazine.
